Who is Samuel Adamu? Saturday, January 29th, 2011 at 9:41 pm
Poverty Stops Here first partnered with Gbawukuchi Village in May 2009. There were many challenges to overcome at the time, and many still remain (you can view all the details of our investments in Gbawakuchi and other communities by going to our Impact page). It is however important for us to show the positive change that our work can have on individuals. That is why we’ll be taking time to highlight stories of those we have encountered in these communities, and the noting the impact on their lives.
We would like to introduce you to Samuel Adamu.
Samuel is 35 years old and is married with 5 children. He was a farmer, making an income of roughly $2 a day when PSH arrived in Gbawukuchi. On this income, he had trouble just providing enough food for his family. There was little hope for a different kind of life for his kids – no good nutrition, no proper education. They were most likely going to end up caught in the same cycle of poverty.
But now things have changed.
With some help, Samuel was able to raise a small down payment (N10,000 – about 70 dollars) on a motor bike which was provided by PSH. Motor-bikes, in addition to providing a means of getting around for individuals, serve as taxis in a lot of developing countries. They can therefore be a means of stable income.
Since Samuel secured the bike, his income has gone up 150% to $35 a week, which might not seem like a lot, but makes a world of difference to him and his family. His children no longer have to go hungry. He can now also afford to pay for them to go to school and get an education.
This underscores what PSH is trying to achieve…we aim to empower individuals to improve their economic situation. With your help, we know we can achieve much more.
